Reagan vs. Roosevelt

Republican President: Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan was a great President who was liked by many people. He took office on January 20, 1981, and immediately started to make a difference. There were many things that he did to improve his presidential term, including ending the Cold War, cutting tax rates, and sparking economic growth. When Reagan was President, he had many ideas and slogans that encouraged the people through the good and the bad times in life. One of the things Reagan emphasized was, “Peace through Strength.” It was his goal to achieve this philosophy successfully because he thought it would create better foreign relations and policies. He wanted to improve the relations with the Soviet Union as well as other countries. Another phrase that Reagan emphasized, was “Morning in America.” This phrase was much more than a slogan that Reagan often spoke of. It symbolized a new morning or beginning in the nation. This encouraged many people to look forward to the amazing things that were coming in the country that Reagan was leading.

Reagan was a great Republican president who did a lot for his country and for the people. I think that Reagan was a very personal president. He did things to protect the people and their well-being and he was very focused on encouraging and motivating the people.

Democratic President: Franklin Roosevelt

Franklin Roosevelt was a great Democratic president. He was elected during a really hard time, the Great Depression. He did a great job helping the Americans get back on their feet and he gave them hope for a brighter future. At the time, there were 13,000,000 people who were unemployed and looking to Roosevelt for some guidance and hope. While under an immense amount of pressure, Roosevelt came up with the New Deal Program. Some people agreed with this program while other people felt quite the opposite. It was eventually denied, but he still went through a great deal of effort to try and pass it.

When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, it was also Roosevelt’s job to recoup the nation and build it back together-no easy task. After it happened, Roosevelt was the one who oversaw organizations that were gathering resources for the war. Roosevelt was given a lot of trials and hardships, however he responded the best way he could in a time of trial. He tried to give the nation hope for the future and he did his best to secure that.

If these two presidents were going head to head, I think that Ronald Reagan would win over Franklin Roosevelt. Reagan has more experience and he had more success during his presidential terms. In addition to that, I think that Reagan was very good at making decisions that were best for the people and the nation. He handled situations better than Roosevelt did. Ronald Reagan was a great President who will be remembered and honored forever.

Blog 1:

Hi, my name is Oprah Winfrey, and I’m running as a candidate to be the next President representing the Equality Party. I am very excited to hopefully be able to represent such a great Party. The Equality Party has such a strong platform and I agree with everything they stand for 100%. I am a strong believer in making sure that everyone has the same equal opportunities. Being an African American woman, myself, I am definitely considered to be in the minority when it comes to the work force and helping out in the government. If I were to be elected as the new representative for the Equality Party, I think it would be a great way to show other people that we believe in granting equal rights for all people.

Like I said once, “I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint – and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.” I am very excited for this next calling in my life and I know that if I get elected I will put others before myself and work hard to benefit all people. I hope that you consider me as a great candidate to be a representative for this new Party. Don’t forget to vote!

-Oprah Winfrey

Blog 2:

Hi, I’m Bertha Anderson, and I am a strong supporter of the Equality Party. As an African American, single mother of two, I have spent much of my life being stereotyped and looked down upon by others. At the Women’s Rights Conference in Brooklyn, I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Miss Oprah Winfrey, and I have to say that she is one of the most down to earth, inspiring people I have ever met, celebrity or not. It is a priority of hers to create and enforce equality for all people, which is so rare among our society today.

Along with Oprah herself, I was pleasantly surprised when I heard about the new Equality Party. The values they represent and issues they focus on seem essential in the improvement of our country. With my current situation, it has been difficult to find a job where I can provide for my family. If Oprah is elected president of 2020, I will hopefully be given the opportunity to prove myself in the work place and life in general.

We will set up websites and call-ins for people to donate if they want to. If you would like to volunteer by answering phones or passing out flyers from door-to-door, feel free to sign up on our website. As far as promoting our party, we will use social media and other websites to show people why the Equality Party is so great.

A group of 4 people came together to make their own party regarding equality and protecting the minority. There have been many controversial topics that arise regarding minority whether it be in certain issues or even racial minority. Because of past events such as, the Great Depression, after the stock market crashed, the country was very focused on picking people back up. Unfortunately, they primarily focused on the white Americans. In 1933, the unemployment rate was over 25 percent, however the unemployment rates for American minorities ranged up to 50 percent. It was hard for the minorities to differentiate the Great Depression and ‘normal’ economic times. The Democratic Party, specifically FDR, attempted to improve the economy by creating the New Deal laws. This wasn’t helping the minority parties at all. Looking back at history, it was easy to see that other parties didn’t prioritize and view the minority people the same. Because of this and many other reasons, the Equality Party was created.

Our symbol for the Equality Party, is an equilateral triangle. All sides of this triangle are the same lengths. This correlates with how we want everyone to experience the same opportunities and privileges.

The main focus of our party is to give opportunities to racial minorities, women, and the LGBT community:

-Racial Minorities: Over the years our country has been very divided regarding racial issues. We feel that it is important to give all people equal experiences no matter the color of their skin or the culture that they come from. We can appeal to these people by having a variety of people representing our party. If people see that our party is more diverse than others, they will be more likely to agree with what our party stands for.

-Women: While women aren’t necessarily viewed as the minority (population wise), many times, women aren’t valued in the government aspect or the work force. People instead view men as being more superior than women in work settings. In the past, women weren’t allowed to vote, they couldn’t have a say in the government and they weren’t given jobs outside of their home. Because we are trying to evolve our nation into a unified body we feel that it is important to give women the same opportunities as men. We can appeal to women by allowing them to represent our party and be candidates.

LGBT community: In the same way that religious freedom is given to people, we feel that beliefs on love and relationships should be open to interpretation without being looked down upon. People have the right to be who they want to be and love who they want to love. Whether or not someone’s relationship status is different than yours, they shouldn’t be any less qualified for jobs and other opportunities. We can appeal to them by letting them be who they want to be and supporting that.

Economy: Protecting small businesses to ensure economic growth.

Various small businesses are the core of the economy. They are probably thought to be the minority, because the bigger companies and businesses are superior to them, but in reality, roughly two out of every three jobs are provided by small businesses. It is important to strengthen and enhance the smaller businesses because they are the backbone of the economy. Along with Small Business Week, started by JFK, small business owners will be provided strong property rights and contract law to help them become as successful as possible. Enhancing the smaller businesses, will start to increase the economic growth.

-National Security: Main job of the national government.

In the Constitution, congress is given the power to declare war, support armies and organize the military forces. The President is considered the “Commander in Chief of the Army.” By dividing the power this way, there are checks and balances limiting too much power in the government and ensuring that protecting the nation is our priority.

-Education: Ensuring that some sort of education is available for everyone.

It is important to provide some sort of opportunity for everyone to be educated-no matter their social status, and how much money they have, so they are able to “write” their own future. Education is very crucial to young adults’ lives and everyone needs it to be successful in the future. We think that it is very important to give education to everyone, but especially the younger kids. We should develop early learning programs for kids who need it so they can thrive and learn so they can be more successful in the future.

-Healthcare: Ensuring that some sort of healthcare is available for everyone.

It is important to provide some sort of healthcare for everyone. Many people aren’t able to have healthcare and we value that everyone should have the opportunity to receive healthcare. This type of heath care will be run by the government and people would pay based on their income. This would allow equal coverage to all people no matter their differences in income.

-Gay Marriage: Gay marriage should be allowed.

The purpose of our party is to protect the minority and allow people to have the freedom to do what they want to. It is because of this, that gay marriage is okay. People should be allowed to marry who they want to. We will not discriminate and judge people just because they love someone different.

-Gun control: We should have the right to own guns.

In the constitution, it says that we have the right to own guns. Everyone should have the right to own a gun, above the age of 16, and they must have taken a gun safety class of course. We don’t want people to be able to buy a gun just whenever they want, they must take a gun safety class similar to a Driver’s Ed class.

Constitutional Amendments

Here are 5 amendments that I thought would be a good idea:

1. The electoral college should be eliminated.

I think that instead of the electoral college, the President should be determined by the popular vote. How is it that we don’t know hardly anyone who represents the electoral college, yet they are the ones who mainly determine who the President is? I think that this new amendment would appeal to the public eye a lot more because they would realize that their opinion is actually being heard and counted.

2. English should be the primary language of the United States

I think as hard as it would be, making English the primary language of the United States would be a good idea. This could create unity among the nations and decrease some problems that occur as a result of different language barriers.

3.  The supreme court justices should have a limited term

As of now, the supreme court justices don’t have a term. They are elected for life. I don’t think that that is the best idea ever. No offense, but some of the justices are very old. While they might still be smart, I think that new justices should be reelected after a certain term. I think that they should serve a term of 10 years. After the term is up, new, younger supreme court justices should be appointed to serve. I think that this amendment could appeal to the people who want to serve as a supreme court justice. This would give them more opportunities to serve- instead of them waiting for someone to die, they would just have to wait 6 years.

4. Equal Rights Amendment

This amendment was originally proposed in 1923, but it was 3 states short from passing. After reading this amendment over, I think that it is a good idea to propose again. This amendment’s goal is to propose equal rights for all, particularly women. It says that civil rights should not be denied to someone based on their sex. This amendment would particularly appeal to women who feel that they aren’t given as much rights as other people. While this isn’t a major amendment, it is a good idea to propose it again.

5. President has the power of a line-item veto

I think that a line-item veto for the President would be a good idea. A line-item veto states that the President can reject specific parts of a bill or law, without having to reject the whole thing. I think that it would be a good idea so that if the President didn’t like some parts of a bill, they wouldn’t necessarily have to reject the whole bill. With the line-item veto, the President can choose what he wants and doesn’t want in a bill.

There are two ways that an amendment can be proposed. In one way, Constitutional Amendments are proposed if two-thirds of both houses of Congress or two-thirds of states call a convention. An amendment is ratified when three-fourths of both houses of Congress or three quarters of the states agree on it. The amendments that are ratified then become a part of the Constitution. The second way an amendment happens is when it starts out as a bill. This bill has to pass through both houses of the legislatures by two-thirds majority and then it goes to the states. Like in the first way, it then has to be approved by three-fourths of the states. It is vey rare to add an amendment to the Constitution. It is a long process and it is hard for it to become ratified.

So that happened…

Trump is president. I wasn’t expecting that at all. Before yesterday, I was assuming that Hillary Clinton was going to be our president. Based off the statistics before the election, everyone all assumed that Clinton was going to be the president. I was watching the news and it said that this election was the biggest upset in history. I never saw that coming. Personally, I don’t think that Trump has a lot of experience in politics or a government setting. Trump is a big business man, he hasn’t had the experience that other people who were running for president in the past had. It will be very interesting to see how Trump starts to run the country.

I think that the biggest problem that Trump will have to face right off the bat is how divided the country is right now. If people don’t like Trump, they really don’t like him. They are vocal about it as well. There are a number of people who are very unhappy right now. Grant it after every election there are always people who are unhappy, I think that this election is different. For some reason, it is really bad this time. The country is really divided right now so it is now Trump’s job to try to unify the country. It will be interesting to see if and how he does it.

Bush vs. Obama

Bush vs. Obama? It is very hard to make the decision of which president was better because quite honestly, I don’t think either of them were very strong presidents. They both have their strengths and weaknesses and they both caused many issues. After analyzing their presidencies and their effects on America, I think that Bush was a better president than Obama.

One of the reasons that Bush was a better president is because of the way that he responded to difficult circumstances. The tragic 9/11 attack took place when Bush was president. No matter who the president is, it would be hard to create the perfect response when something so terrible like that happened. When 9/11 happened, Bush did the best he could to try to recoup the country saying that everything was going to be alright. After 9/11, Bush made it a point to order the reformation of the military so it could improve in the most efficient way possible.

Because of 9/11, Bush ordered the military to invade Afghanistan. He made the act to start the war against terrorism.  Yes, the Iraq War wasn’t the best time for America, but because of it, Osama Bin Laden was captured and killed and Saddam Hussein was taken out as well. If Bush hadn’t ordered the invasion, Bin Laden and Hussein wouldn’t have been captured right away.

In my opinion, I didn’t think that Obama responded well in hard situations. One example is when there was a dispute regarding the Affordable Care Act and whether or not it should be defunded. This caused a lot of tension and argument between the federal government which eventually led to the government completely shutting down for 16 days. While Obama may or may not have caused this issue, this wasn’t the best way to handle the situation. Another example, was the Sandy Hook Shooting in Connecticut. Many of the things that Obama said were helpful and encouraging, but he never acted on anything like Bush did. He said things similar to phrases like, ‘we will bring peace’ or ‘we will stop this from happening again.’ While these can be very helpful and encouraging at a dark time, he never actually acted on anything and did what he said he was going to do.

During Obama’s presidency, the unemployment rates were way higher than when Bush was president. In addition to that, Obama also increased the amount of debt that we are in. Another reason why Obama wasn’t the best president is because of his health care program, also known as Obamacare. Obamacare requires a lot of money to fund, which is one reason why our debt has increased since Obama became president. Obamacare also limits the amount of freedom that people have to choose whether or not they want health insurance. Before people were allowed to pick if they wanted health insurance or not. With Obamacare, people either have to pay for insurance or pay for a penalty fee. Obamacare is another reason why Obama isn’t a very good president compared to Bush.

While both of these presidents weren’t necessarily the best, I think that Bush was a better president than Obama.

What makes a bad Government?

Every type of government has numerous pros and cons that are unique to the other governments. However, there are many things that shouldn’t happen in a government system and there are many things that can make a bad government. Here is a list of top ten things that will make a bad government:

  1. An Uninvolved Government. It is important for the government to be involved in the people’s lives so that the people can be more involved in the government. If the government isn’t involved, then who will the people look to when they need help?
  2. No Checks and Balances. It is important to have checks and balances because the three branches of power keep the power from going all to one branch. If a government weren’t to have checks and balances, then one branch could become too powerful and create a lot of tension.
  3. A Divided Government. It is very important for the members in the government to cooperate and get along with one another. If they don’t, then it could create a divided government causing strife among the all the members. This wouldn’t be helpful when making big and important decisions. As stated in Lincoln’s House Divided Speech, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
  4. A Segregated Government. A segregated government is different from a divided government. If a government were segregated and if it doesn’t emphasize equality throughout the nations, it could create many problems between other countries and other races.
  5. Poor Military System. If a government has a poor military system, then how can the people feel protected when something major occurs? A bad military can be one of the causes of a bad government.
  6. Government’s response to tough situations. It is important that, in a tough situation, the government responds in the best way possible to avoid other issues. If the government doesn’t respond well to tough situations, then the people will have no one to look to in times of desperate need.
  7. High taxes. When the government raises the taxes to be very high, it can cause many problems. People could lose their jobs, businesses could deploy, and many more issues could arise. Raising taxes would be a big factor in making a bad government.
  8. Bad relations with other nations. It is important for our government to have good relationships with other nations. If the government doesn’t care and we end up having bad relationships with other key nations, it would be very problematic.
  9. Doesn’t listen to the people. It is very important for the government to listen to the people so they feel like their opinions are being heard. If all of a sudden, the government were to stop listening to the people, the people could revolt because they aren’t being heard.
  10. Corrupt Leader. If a government were to have a corrupt leader, many issues would break loose. There have been examples of corrupt leaders in the past, and we see how it changed the government in a bad way. Corrupt leaders are the number one reason why a government can be bad.

These are the top reasons in which I think that a government can become bad and problematic.

Constitutional Monarchy

A constitutional monarchy is when a ruler runs a country, but does so with regards to a constitution. Unlike an absolute monarchy, a constitutional monarchy ruler doesn’t have all the power. They use a constitution to help in the decision making process. In the Bible, there were many examples of monarchies in the Old and New Testament. There were many empires that can be considered to be similar to a type of monarchy. The Egyptians, Romans, and Babylonians are examples of empires with a ruler who ruled in accordance to a so called constitution or other type of law.

Another example of constitutional monarchies in the Bible would be in the Old Testament where God appointed numerous judges to rule over Israel. There was a total of 12 judges who helped lead and deliver Israel out of their current state of sin. One of the main judges, Gideon, helped deliver the Israelites from the Midianites. He was a main leader who the Israelites looked to, yet he didn’t have all the power. He based many of his decisions off of what God had told him to do. In many ways, this is similar to a constitutional monarchy.

Although there were many examples of monarchies before, the Israelites truly became a monarchy when they anointed their first king. Saul was anointed as the first king of Israel, followed by David and then Solomon. None of these kings had absolute power over Israel. They always looked to God and made their decisions based off of what God had told them. This is very similar to a constitutional monarchy.

In Romans 13: 1-2, God says that no matter the government or leader people should submit to their authority and be respectful. With a constitutional monarchy, some people may disagree, but it is important to remember to be respectful. Those who rebel against authority, in a sense, rebel against God. Even if people were to disagree, they should submit to their authorities and be polite. All of these biblical reasons are why a constitutional monarchy would be a great idea in various countries.

Logically, I think that a constitutional monarchy works better than an absolute monarchy because of the fact that the leader doesn’t truly have all the power. When a leader has all the power over the people, it can create many conflicts between the people and the leader. But when a leader doesn’t have as much power, there aren’t as many conflicts that could happen. The power is split up and it allows it to be more evenly balanced. With the balance of power, more people can be involved and speak up in the government.

A constitutional monarchy, like any other form of government, has various pros and cons, but I think it is a great type of government that could be helpful for different countries.

My Ideal Government

In a perfect world, we would have a government that runs the country in the best way possible with very few problems that arise. But because we live in a world that isn’t perfect, the government doesn’t always make the best decisions. In addition to that, people don’t always agree on various ideas and topics. So we need to make the government in a way where the least amount of problems come up.

In an ideal community, the people are the best way to help decide on the kind of government to have. As stated by Abraham Lincoln, the best type of government is a government by the people and for the people.  I think it’s important to make sure that people feel like their opinions are being heard, so I think voting would be the best way to decide on what kind of government to have. It’s valuable to have people voting for all levels of government, starting from the mayor of their community all the way up to the President of the United States. After the votes are collected and counted, the majority will win.

While it is essential to vote for the President, it is just as relevant to vote for the local mayor in the community. Many times, people will only vote during the national campaigns and they won’t participate in local elections. The local government lays the foundation for national policies and without it, major government decisions wouldn’t be able to be made. Local governments act as a mediator or an advocate to the national government about decisions that need to be addressed.

The government should be making decisions that are good for the people. While it is hard to take everyone’s opinion and make a decision where everyone agrees, it is still important that the government listens to the people as best as they can. I also think that the government can be more invested in people’s lives to make it more personal. If the government isn’t involved in people’s lives, what will happen when something big happens? Who are the people going to go to for help or support?

Just as the government needs to be invested in the people’s lives, the people need to be equally invested in the government.  When people are more interested in the government, they have a better understanding of what is going on in the world around them. Because everyone is different, there may be some people who aren’t interested in government and some people who don’t want anything to do with it. While this is understandable, it is also important to consider that if people don’t vote or if they aren’t involved, they can’t complain if something doesn’t go their way.

Lastly, no matter who the leader is or what type of government it is, it’s important for us to respect our authorities even if we don’t agree with them. Just like it says in Romans 13: 1-2, we need to honor our authorities because they are above us.
